Raymond Banning is a concert pianist whose recitals have been singled out as events of expressive and emotional power. His recent concerts at the Wigmore Hall have drawn audiences packed with notable figures from the music and arts world and established him as a major performer in the tradition of the great Romantic pianists. His playing is imbued with those qualities that marked out the great performers of the past: qualities of tone, colour and legato playing. Born with a natural talent, he performed his first piano concertos in his teens, followed by study at the Royal College of Music. In the 1980s he started to build his performing career on a national level, and in 1990 joined the staff at Trinity College of Music, where he has established himself as a distinguished teacher and director of teachers’ courses. His concerts attract large audiences, and he regularly performs for a wide range of charitable causes, for which he has raised tens of thousands of pounds in recent years. He has been prominently featured in The Times, The Observer, and The Independent newspapers, BBC Music Magazine, Classical Music magazine, Classic FM Magazine, and Readers Digest. He has also been featured on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM, while a Radio 4 broadcast was nominated for a Sony radio award. Raymond strongly believes that great music should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age and ability. With writer and broadcaster Richard Ingrams, he presides over the hugely popular piano weekends sponsored by The Oldie magazine, which allow amateur adult pianists to develop their playing skills. He also performs concerts of words and music with such artists as Ian Hislop, Dame Beryl Bainbridge, Edward Fox and Stephanie Cole. In 2004 he was appointed Patron of the Harlow Piano Festival.
