Blackheath Halls is one of the most outstanding centres for music and the performing arts in London, and is London's oldest established purpose-built concert venue. The Halls are a wholly owned subsidiary of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, and provide Trinity College of Music with its regular base for large-scale rehearsals and performance.
Considered to be amongst the finest concert facilities available to any conservatoire, the Great Hall is a magnificent space. In addition, the Recital Room is an excellent venue for chamber concerts and a range of other events, including the popular Blackheath Sunday Morning Coffee Concert Series. The ceiling in the Great Hall provides some of the best acoustics in the United Kingdom for large-scale orchestral performance, and the Halls regularly welcome world-renowned orchestras and ensembles for recordings and rehearsals.Among those who choose the Great Hall as their preferred recording venue are Chandos Records, English National Opera, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia, and the distinguished conductors Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Charles Mackerras and Richard Hickox.
Blackheath Halls’ programme of performances and events covers classical, jazz, folk, world music, blues, rock and pop, as well as a broad range of children’s and community events and activities.Recent artists performing at the Halls have included the world-renowned violinist, Igor Oistrakh, Piers Lane, the Brodsky Quartet, Sir Richard Rodney Bennett and Claire Martin, Jamie Cullum, Paco Peña, The Breeders, The Blues Band, The Mbawula Township Choir, The Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain, Kate Rusby, Humphrey Lyttelton, Glenn Tilbrook, Julian Lloyd Webber, Courtney Pine, and Michael McIntyre amongst others.
The Halls have recently completed phase one of a major programme of refurbishment and restoration work, including refurbishment of the front of the roof, frontage brickwork, terracotta and stucco, and restoration of the front windows, stained glass and timberwork. In addition, the creation of a ramp to the front of the building and electronic doors has improved disabled access to the Halls.
Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance works in partnership with the local authorities of Greenwich and Lewisham in running the Halls as an important local amenity and arts centre.Trinity College of Music’s regular performances form part of an extensive programme open to the public, not only in the Great Hall, but also in the Recital Room, and in the Café Bar.The interface between practising professionals, the public, students and professorial staff, which Blackheath Halls makes possible, is a rare phenomenon in the Higher Education sector.
