The String Faculty provides a vibrant and exciting environment in which to learn, tailored to meet the needs of individual students. The faculty of internationally renowned professors, combined with our chamber, orchestral and faculty programmes will help you evolve into a musician equipped for the ever evolving, diverse world of music.

Bowed Strings

Bowed string students have the chance to take part in masterclasses, competitions and performance classes, and to perform in a variety of large ensembles including Symphony and Chamber Orchestra, String Ensemble, Contemporary Music Group, Sinfonia and Early Music ensembles. There are also opportunities to work with dancers and choreographers from Laban. Postgraduate students have the opportunity to participate in the London Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonia String Schemes.

Harp

The scope of Trinity's harp provision is unique in the UK, providing innovative, wide-ranging and fully integrated tuition supported by a strong programme of Principal Study Support classes covering all aspects of preparation for orchestral and chamber music performance. Other specialist classes cover 20th century techniques, early harp, jazz and pop harp and practice techniques.

Guitar and Mandolin

Guitar and mandolin students are given an understanding of ensemble skills through chamber groups and our large-scale Guitar Orchestra. Awareness of instrumental technique and musical style is integrated with performance preparation to develop a flexible approach to playing. Guitar students concentrate on a variety of musical notations, including chord symbols and figured bass. Mandolin players focus on many varied stylistic influences and specialist classes in sight-reading skills and orchestral extracts ensure students are prepared for a broad and varied career.

Principal Study Support Classes

Classes range from expert coaching on orchestral excerpts, recording studio techniques, period performance practice, improvisation, teaching, sight-reading skills, to useful advice on presentation, instrument maintenance, diary services, even tax!

Chamber Music & Quartets in Residence

Chamber music groups receive regular coaching not only from our own in-house coaches drawn from many of the country's leading ensembles, but also from our Quartet in Residence, the Wihan Quartet, the Richard Carne and Bulldog Junior Fellowship Quartets, the Carducci and Brodovski Quartet respectively, and regular visitors the Allegri and Brodsky Quartets, among others. All groups are able to perform in Chamber Music Platforms and there are many opportunities to take part in external concerts and festivals.
