Careers and Student Welfare

Careers

Students are encouraged to discuss their career aspirations and options with teaching and administrative staff, who are often able to provide advice and contacts. Students in years 11 and 12 usually begin to think about Higher Education at this point, and some have the dilemma of choosing between university or conservatoire if they are interested in a music course. Junior Trinity is able to advise on UCAS and CUKAS (www.ucas.ac.uk and www.cukas.ac.uk) entries and there is also an annual careers seminar organised jointly by the Junior Departments of the London Conservatoires where speakers from all branches of the profession are represented. In May 2007 the speakers at the Junior Trinity seminar were:

Andrew Burke, Chief Executive, London Sinfonietta
Prof John Irving, Music Department, Bristol University
Dr Claire Mera-Nelson, Dean of Studies, Trinity College of Music
Dr Robert Saxton, Music Department, Oxford University

The College Library includes reference copies of careers guides.

Student Welfare

Junior Trinity places great emphasis on providing a safe and caring environment for its students in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Our Administrator/Concerts Manager and House Services and Reception staff are all trained First Aiders.

All teaching and administrative staff, including deputy teachers, undergo CRB checks as part of the appointment process.

King Charles Court at the Old Royal Naval College is a secure environment and students are at a safe distance from busy roads. Registers are taken in each lesson and class and unauthorised absences are strictly monitored.

Changes in your circumstances

In exceptional circumstances, it may be appropriate for students to change instrumental/vocal teachers. This is only permitted at the beginning of term and at least half a term’s notice is required. Initial requests for a change of teacher should be made to the Director of Junior Trinity, whose decision is final.

Withdrawal from Junior Trinity may happen as a result of changes in family or educational circumstances. Termination of studies is permitted at the end of term, and notice must be given before the half term break. Where this is not possible, parents will be charged a full term’s fees in lieu of notice. Please note that this policy also applies to termination at the end of the summer term.
