Tue 19 Jan, 7.30pmThe Changing Ages of ManPeacock Room, Trinity College of Music Admission freeAlkan’s Grande Sonata ‘The Four Ages’ with contemporary extensions. Published in 1847, Alkan’s Grande Sonate comprises four movements depicting the ‘ages of man’ as seen by the composer - aged 20, 30, 40 and 50, with the last movement describing an ancient man awaiting death. This piece has always been seen ironically as Alkan lived to the age of 75, but it is even more unrealistic with our modern life expectation. This concert brings the concept up to date, with newly composed aged 60 and 70 movements by Anthony Green and Derek Foster, and an aged 10 movement provided by the Junior Department. Each movement will be played by a performer who has recently reached the specific age, providing an element of realism to the various musical depictions.
