Users of the Greenwich Toy Library in Woolwich took part in a five week long music project led by Julian West and Trinity students. Greenwich Toy & Leisure Library Association is one of the leading toy libraries for children with special needs (and their families/carers) in the UK.
The children were encouraged to communicate with each other through music and they created their own group compositions based on a theme of space using classroom percussion. They also wrote their own song, and enjoyed weekly performances from Julian and the Trinity students.
The project ended in an informal performance at the Toy Library to an invited audience of family and friends.
As part of Trinity’s early years work, students worked with practitioner Klio Papadopolou, to take part in activities exploring rhythm and song for children under six.
The sessions which were held each Sunday in May at the National Maritime Museum were well attended by children aged between a few months and six years old.
This term, Trinity College of Music students have been working with Vital Arts, the innovative arts programme for Barts and the London NHS Trust.
Students have been based at the Royal London Hospital with musician Juliet Hutchinson and teachers from the hospital school on the My Sound project. They have been able to explore the links between music and health by helping young patients at the hospital to create their own compositions with music technology.
