Trinity College of Music boasts a vibrant Jazz Faculty, comprising professors of international repute and a student body excited by the range of approaches to jazz in the 21st century. Our approach is student-centred, enabling students to become highly skilled and to develop into the jazz musicians they want to become.
Performance Studies
Jazz students at Trinity develop as improvisers within a range of small ensembles (combos and trios, etc) and improvisation classes, while all supporting classes (jazz harmony and rhythm, etc) are practical. Large ensembles (Trinity Big Band, Contemporary Jazz Ensemble and a new Improvisers' Ensemble) provide students with further performance experience supporting the development of key skills as well as providing opportunities for aspiring jazz composers.
Performance projects culminate in concerts as part of the regular Beats in the Bar series at Blackheath Halls, students often performing side by side with faculty members and visiting artists.
Trinity's Jazz Faculty enjoys an excellent relationship with all London Jazz Clubs and promoters, and presents masterclasses that feature eminent jazz musicians.
Collaboration & Performance
Jazz has always been a collaborative process, originating from musical activities involving musicians from a range of musical cultures. Trinity students not only collaborate together, but also with dancers from Laban, musicians from the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Institute of Indian Art and Culture, and other artists in a range of workshop and performance situations.
Trinity jazz students are encouraged to form their own projects, many organising their own performances and sessions in London. Trinity's jazz ensembles are prominent within the profession, appearing at established jazz venues, concert halls and international festivals. Trinity jazz students appear annually at the Isle of Wight Jazz Festival, the Greenwich Jazz Festival and the Dartington International Summer School.
