Lynda Coffin’s early
formative studies were with Alan Melly, who continued a teaching line from Paul
Taffanel. Thereafter she studied flute
with Geoffrey Gilbert at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and also with
the celebrated flautist Marcel Moyse.
Her first
professional position was Principal Flute with the Ulster Orchestra. On her return to England
she became Principal Flute with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, where her
recordings of major flute solos within the orchestral repertoire were widely
acclaimed.
On moving to London, Lynda Coffin
joined the Nash Ensemble and shortly thereafter became a Principal Flute member
of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. She has since performed and recorded as
guest principal with virtually all of the London
orchestras, appearing as soloist with many of them. She is currently Principal
Flute of the London Concert Orchestra and the Mozart Festival Orchestra.
Solo and chamber
music performances have involved further recording work, radio and television
appearances and duo flute recitals with James Galway for the BBC.
Recent collaborations
include chamber music recitals with Raphael Wallfisch and family, the Doric
string quartet and the Rasumovsky string quartet.
Recording session
work has included the solo flute part for the film Emma, the sound track
of which was awarded an Oscar.
Lynda Coffin is
sought after as an orchestral flute coach. Past and present pupils include
Principal Flautists of Professional Orchestras, LPO Young Players Projects and
the Britten-Pears Young Artists Programme
During the Summer she enjoys giving Flute Master
Classes and tutoring Wind Chamber Music, for example at Dartington
International Summer School and at Cubertou in south west France. |
