This module develops informed and sophisticated performers / composers who are able to present an articulate and reasoned advocacy of their performance / composition activities. It cultivates an awareness of historical, cultural, social and aesthetic issues relating to music. Students attend seminars / practical workshops on keys issues relating to a range of critical listening and analytical approaches, the application of primary and secondary source materials, editions and recordings, the notation and context of music in specific periods, ornamentation, pitch and authenticity. Specific areas explored include Renaissance to Classical, the Nineteenth Century and the Twentieth Century and Beyond. Students undertake a critical project and are also assessed in a Viva Voce. Submission formats for the project include a critical essay, a treatise on a notational issue, an analytical study with scholarly commentary, a spoken presentation in the format of a radio broadcast incorporating a scholarly commentary, a DVD / video demonstration in the format of a TV documentary incorporating a scholarly commentary, a critical edition and a CD of music performed / composed by the student accompanied by a scholarly commentary. |
