Wind, brass and percussion students gain an invaluable insight into the diverse opportunities open to professional musicians. Training focuses on preparing students for careers as musicians in the fullest sense. Many performance opportunities are offered, supported by a strong programme of repertoire sessions and instrument-specific classes.
Woodwind and Brass students focus on developing a secure technical facility and covering a wide range of solo, chamber and orchestral repertoire. There are also opportunities to gain experience performing on doubling instruments, period instruments and jazz.
Percussion students are given training to prepare them to meet the complex demands of the profession, choosing either Orchestral Percussion and Timpani or Orchestral Percussion and Drum Kit as their Principal Study.
PERFORMANCE STUDIES
Weekly specialist Wind and Brass classes focus on individual instrumental technique, solo, chamber and orchestral repertoire as well as early music, contemporary music and jazz. Percussion students receive additional tuition in areas such as orchestral repertoire and technique, world percussion, jazz vibraphone and four mallet technique, and may also include other instruments in their programme of study.
COLLABORATION & PERFORMANCE
Students are able to gain a diverse range of performance experience in solo, duo, chamber music and orchestral performance. Orchestral and large ensemble seating is mostly arranged on a rotational basis giving all students the widest possible range of experience. In addition to the extensive on-site programme of recitals and performance platforms, the College offers performance opportunities in a variety of external venues, concert series and festivals. Concerto opportunities are available annually and soloists are selected by audition.
Chamber music forms a significant part of students’ studies and experience is gained both within the faculty and in collaboration with members of other faculties. Students are actively encouraged to form their own chamber groups for which professional coaching is available. Wind Orchestra, wind, brass and percussion ensembles provide large-scale chamber music experience at a professional level including involvement in recordings for leading labels.
