Professorial Staff - Composition

 

 

John's relationship with the Trinity goes back more than 25 years to when he started his studies here in 1980.

John's musical career began in 1969 when he became a chorister at Exeter Cathedral during the tenure of Lionel Dakers, and it was there that his earliest pieces were publicly performed.

At Trinity he studied Composition with Richard Arnell, later gaining a M.Mus. at Goldsmiths’ College where he studied with Stanley Glasser.

Since then he has written music for almost every imaginable situation: Concert Hall, Jazz Club, TV, Radio and Film. John worked on both sides of the Atlantic for several years, and is currently living in Los Angeles where he contributes to scores for major Hollywood features as an Orchestrator, Composer of additional music and arranger.

His music has been performed at venues such as the ICA, the South Bank, and the Glastonbury Festival, and has been broadcast on all the UK's major TV networks.

John has had a commitment to Teaching for 25 years, having covered the entire range from Primary School to Higher Education. He has been a member of the TCM Composition Faculty for 15 years.

He also taught at the Royal Academy for 12 years, where he was made an Honorary Associate in 2003.
